The University of Connecticut School of Social Work has always been an institution well known to me during my adolescent years. While I was attending elementary school, my mother attended the School of Social Work. I often recall helping her type her papers, supporting her along the way, and having visited the school numerous times. When questioning my choice of graduate school, I like to think that I have been enrolled here at UConn SSW since the fifth grade.
When it came time to choosing a graduate school officially in my senior year at UCONN, I wanted to choose a program where I could pursue a gratifying degree which also exposed me to a diversified body of classmates. I realized early on through my grandfather, that maintaining relationships with colleagues often is one’s most valuable resource. Looking back at my tenure as an undergraduate student, I already was convinced of UConn’s commitment to excellence. The University of Connecticut School of Social Work was a natural combination of excellent opportunity and reputation.
My first year at the School has left me a fulfilling experience academically and professionally. The professors who I worked with throughout my first year enabled me to discover my strengths as a future clinician, while providing me with a breadth of knowledge along the way. Instruction always was supported by the University’s commitment to research and always augmented by the professor’s valuable career as practitioners. The placement I was assigned to my first year has proved to be a valuable resource in my second year at the School of Social Work, and my current placement.
The school supports its students in their pursuit to contribute back to the community and school. Through the help of classmates, professors and the professional social work community, I was given the chance to contribute to the profession. I ran and won a board seat as the MSW Representative for the board of directors of NASW Connecticut. Within the school, I contributed in developing the mission for the Student Organization. During the summer break, I planned a social for incoming students and in addition to my duties for NASW, I represent fellow students on the Educational Policy Committee.
After a year and a half at the school, my advice is to be involved, whether it is at a school level or in the classroom. Maintaining involvement in the various school functions allows a student the opportunity to build professional friendships with professors and fellow classmates.
