Sabrina Adams
Advanced Year Casework Student
Bachelor’s Degree:
Central Connecticut State University
Bachelor of Arts in Social Work, BSW
During my undergraduate program I was encouraged to attend seminars and workshops offered at the UConn School of Social Work. This experience gave me an opportunity to see first hand the caliber of faculty and the diverse student body in the MSW program. Also, the uniqueness of the School offering the five method based specializations reinforced my decision of knowing that the School of Social Work was the right choice for me.
Having a Bachelor in Social Work fully prepared me for the MSW program at the School. My first field placement was at Quirk Middle School in Hartford. I provided inner city students with individual and group therapy and worked closely with the Connecticut Juvenile Review board to reduce truancy in Hartford. Additionally, I developed a better understanding of the role of school social workers within the context of the school and the larger community.
My advanced placement is at the University of Connecticut Counseling and Mental Health Services in which I am a Clinical Graduate Assistant. This placement is assisting me in developing the necessary skills to reach my ultimate goal of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
During my first year I served as a case work student representative. I attended monthly faculty meetings to advocate for case work students and organized social gatherings. I was able to become more involved in the School and to develop relationships with faculty, staff, administration and my peers. I have also worked in the Student Services Office as an assistant to the Director of Student Services since I became a matriculated student. Presently, I currently serve as Co-Chair for the Student Organization, Organization of Black Social Work Students and Graduation Committee.
The University of Connecticut School of Social Work is shaping me into a professional social worker and allowed me to develop leadership skills through the Student Organization. This experience has given me a better understanding and appreciation for higher education institutions. If I could give advice to students it would be to become active in the School community. By doing this, they will have an enriched learning experience and will have an opportunity to make changes on behalf of students.
