Sara Barber

Advanced Standing Casework Student

Bachelor’s Degree:
Eastern Connecticut State University
Bachelor of Arts in Social Work, BSW

I decided to attend Uconn School of Social Work because the program offered a specific area of specialization, rather then just a generalist approach. I also liked the option of having a focused area of study. For me, these were the two most important factors in deciding to enroll as a student at UConn. Advice from colleagues, professors and former UConn students helped me make my final decision.

The Advanced Standing option was the best fit for me. At first I was apprehensive about enrolling in such an intense program. I was anxiety stricken the first few days of the summer session, but the professors really made me feel comfortable. They answered all my questions and made me feel like part of the school. I enjoyed the summer session because the class sizes were small and I was able to meet and connect with other Advanced Standing students. Having campus activities such as cookouts and other social activities helped me get to know other students and meet faculty.

As an Advanced Standing student I was concerned that I would be at a disadvantage compared to those students that had been at the school longer. Friendships had already formed, professors were known and the school was familiar. This thought was quickly dismissed when I attended my first class in the fall. The students and faculty were inviting and welcoming.

I am currently completing my field placement at Catholic Charities in Norwich, CT. I work with individuals, children and families providing counseling services. I also co-facilitate a healthy coping skills group for adults. During my placement I have been able to utilize and incorporate the skills and knowledge I have been learning in class into my work. I have found that the professors provide ample resources and are willing to answer any questions you have about how to improve your skills and what to do when you have a difficult case. I find classes in which role-playing and real case examples are used help provide me with a deeper understanding of practice skills.

As far as advice, I would tell any Advanced Standing student to take Research 332 over the summer or in the fall semester. I would also advise all to take this opportunity to be in the role of a student and use this time to gain knowledge and learn about what kind of person you are and what kind of social worker you want to be. It’s important to remember that we are always evolving and that no one way is the correct way. Continue to shape who you are and build your own reputation.
