Research I: Principles and Methods of Social Work Research Waiver Examination
You may take the examination one of the following dates at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. Please contact Joanne Donati by email at Joanne.Donati@uconn.edu to reserve your space.
- Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
- Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
- Room 203
The exam should take approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours. Room locations will be posted in the main lobby of the School the day of the exam.
Students may only sit for this exam once. A score of 70% is passing. Students are strongly urged to consult any number of commonly used texts in social work research in preparation for the exam.
- These include texts such as:
- Bloom, M., Fischer, J., & Orme, J. (any edition). Evaluating Practice. Needham Heights, MA: Allyn & Bacon.
- Cournoyer, D. & Klein, W. (2000). Research Methods for Social Work. Needham Heights, MA: Allyn & Bacon.
- Grinnell, R. (any edition). Social Work Research and Evaluation. Itasca, IL: Peacock.
- Rubin, A. & Babbie, E. (any edition). Research Methods for Social Work. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth.
- Topics to be considered should include:
- Scientific reasoning and critical thinking
- Research ethics
- Research question formulation
- Measurement including reliability and validity
- Research designs and inference
- Sampling and external validity
- Data collection
- Data analysis (numeric and non-numeric)
